Introducing the Address Book

 Introducing the Address Book
The Address Book provides a convenient place to store contact information for easy retrieval by programs such as Microsoft Outlook Express. It also features access to Internet directory services, which you can use to look up people and businesses on the Internet. You'll find that the following features help you organize all your contact information into the most usable form for you.
Store important information about the people and groups who are important to you
With your Address Book, you have a place to store e-mail addresses, home and work addresses, phone and fax numbers, digital IDs, conferencing information, instant messaging addresses, and personal information such as birthdays or anniversaries. You can also store individual and business Internet addresses, and link directly to them from your Address Book. For extra information that doesn't fit in these categories, there's a generous section for notes.
Find people and businesses by using Internet directory services
Directory services are powerful search tools that enable you to look up names and addresses on the Internet. The Address Book supports Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) for using Internet directory services.
Create groups of contacts for mailing lists
You can create groups of contacts to make it easy to send e-mail to a set of people, such as business associates, relatives, or friends. Any time you want to send e-mail to everyone in the group, just use the group name instead of entering each contact individually. Creating groups is also a good way to organize a large Address Book.
Share your Address Book with other users
By creating an identity for every person who uses the Address Book, each user can organize contacts into his own folder. In addition, each user can put contacts into a Shared Contacts folder so that other identities can use them.
Import names from your other address books
Moving forward with Outlook Express doesn't mean leaving your old address book information behind. You can import your personal address books from numerous popular e-mail programs including Microsoft Exchange, Eudora Light and Eudora Pro, Netscape Communicator, Microsoft Internet Mail for Windows 3.1, and any program that exports text files with comma-separated values (CSV).
You can also use your address book files with either Microsoft Exchange or any other program that imports files in CSV format.
Send and receive business cards
Business cards are the new way to send contact information electronically. When you create a business card in the Address Book, your contact information is stored in vCard format, so it can be exchanged between different programs (such as e-mail, address books, and personal planners), and between different digital devices (such as desktop computers, laptops or portable computers, personal digital assistants, and telephony equipment).
Print all or part of your Address Book and take it with you
Now you can print your Address Book to add to your personal planner. With three page styles to choose from, you can print all contact information, only business information, or only phone numbers, for any or all contacts.

Windows Management Instrumentation Tester (WBEMTest)

Windows Management Instrumentation Tester (WBEMTest)

Windows Management Instrumentation Tester, also called WBEMTest, is a general-purpose utility for viewing or modifying Common Information Model (CIM) classes, instances, or methods during the development of Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) providers and WMI applications. WBEMTest can also be used for troubleshooting WMI or programs that depend on WMI.

** Note
  • Although Microsoft provides this documentation to assist you in using WBEMTest, the tool is primarily intended for use by Microsoft Product Support Services.
Use WBEMTest to perform the following tasks:
  • Create, enumerate, and delete CIM classes and instances
  • Execute methods
  • Run queries
  • Display the Managed Object Format (MOF) code for classes and instances.
Because WBEMTest acts as a front-end to the COM API for WMI, you can also use WBEMTest to check queries, classes, and instances when developing WMI providers and WMI client applications.
For more information, see COM API for WMI. (http://www.microsoft.com/)
The executable file for WBEMTest, Wbemtest.exe, is installed in the WBEM directory of your Windows system directory. On Windows XP systems, this is the %windir%\system32\Wbem folder.

WordPad overview, Using WordPad

WordPad overview
With WordPad, you can create and edit simple text documents or documents with complex formatting and graphics. You can link or embed information from other documents into a WordPad document.
You can save your WordPad file as a text file, rich text file, text file for MS-DOS, or Unicode. These formats provide greater flexibility when working with other programs. Documents that use multiple languages should be saved as rich text files.
Using WordPad
You might need to be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to perform some tasks.
You can use WordPad to create or edit text files that contain formatting or graphics. Use Notepad for basic text editing or for creating Web pages.
Open  ** WordPad.
**Notes

Regional and Language Options overview
Using Regional and Language Options in Control Panel, you can install multiple languages on your computer, such as Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, and Western European languages (French, Spanish, German, and many others). You can choose which one you want to use when you create a document. Windows then makes the character set for that language available, so you can start writing.
Both WordPad and Notepad let you create documents in other languages, but a word processing program may include other features, such as spell checkers, to help you write documents in multiple languages.
If you send your document to someone else, the recipient must also have the same languages installed in order to read or edit the file.
To compose a document using multiple languages
  1. Create or open a document.
  2. In the notification area, click the language icon located near the system time, and then click the language you want to use.
  3. Compose your document.
  4. To change languages, click the language icon in the notification area, and then select another language from the list.
      ** Note
  • If the language icon is not in the notification area, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Regional and Language Options. On the Languages tab, select Enable indicator on taskbar.

What is Windows Product Activation?

What is Windows Product Activation?

Due to piracy and other forms of unauthorized use, users cannot always be sure that they have a genuine copy of Windows XP. The goal of product activation is to reduce a form of piracy known as casual copying or "softlifting". Casual copying is the sharing and installation of software that is not in compliance with the software's end user license agreement, or EULA, and is estimated to contribute to half of all pirated installations. Microsoft developed Product Activation for Windows to help ensure that each Windows XP license is installed in compliance with the EULA and is not installed on more than the limited number (usually one) of computers allowed by the product EULA. We have worked to make it as easy as possible to activate a licensed installation of Windows XP.
To learn more about Microsoft's licensing policies, open ~ EULA.
During software installation, the setup wizard prompts you to enter a product key usually located on the back of the Windows CD-ROM folder. The product key is a 25 character alphanumeric code shown in five groups of five characters each (for example, BCDFG-12345-HJKLM-67890-NPQRS). Keep the product key in a safe location and do not share it with others. This product key forms the basis for your ability to install and use Windows.
The product key also forms the basis for the product ID that is created when Windows XP is installed. Each licensed instance of Windows XP has a unique Product ID. The Product ID has 20 characters arranged like this: 12345-123-1234567-12345. It is listed in the properties for My Computer.
